55022 Royal Scots Grey
entered service with British Rail (BR) in February 1961 and was based at Haymarket depot in Edinburgh. It was named during a ceremony held at Edinburgh Waverley station in June 1962. It was renumbered from D9016 in April 1974.
55022 became the last Deltic to work under BR on 2nd January 1982 when it hauled the Deltic Scotsman Farewell
railtour from Edinburgh-London King’s Cross. The arrival of the tour back in the capital was met by huge crowds of people in varying degrees of emotion together with camera crews from national TV. Those who saw the news reports at the time even witnessed one person kneel and kiss the locomotive by way of goodbye. The locomotive was withdrawn the following day due to it being surplus to requirements after over 20 years of active service.
After withdrawal, 55022 was purchased by the D9000 Fund (later Deltic 9000 Locomotives Limited) and moved to the Nene Valley Railway
. Over the following few years it operated on several charters and railtours.
In 2004 Deltic 9000 Locomotives Limited (DNLL) went into liquidation with the result that all its locomotives including 55022 were sold to private individuals. 55022 was purchased by Beaver Sports and continues to operate as a charter locomotive for railtour operators.
