40135, "Class 40"40135_20111112_1040135 at East Lancashire Railway, Rawtenstall

Back in 1984 I happened to be on a rail journey between Birmingham and Leicester. Whilst making a scheduled stop at Nuneaton, I saw Class 40 locomotive 40135 dumped in a siding. I always had a soft spot for the class so, thinking it was the last time I would see it before scrapping, I leant out of the carriage window and took a photograph.

Happily, 40135 led a charmed life and it survived scrapping twice before being bought by the Class 40 Preservation Society. The other day I visited the East Lancashire Railway, where it resides, and finally managed to obtain another photograph of the same locomotive after 27 years. It certainly looks better after all these years and the British Rail green livery seems to suit this class.
