55022 Royal Scots Grey
was used for The Devonian tour run by Spitfire Railtours
. The locomotive worked from Doncaster to Paignton, a total of almost 600 miles for the one day trip. Locomotive 47804 was used as tail-gunner and back-up purposes throughout the tour.
The tour experienced a minor drama on the outward leg with 55022 having a small exhaust fire whilst climbing Whiteball Bank. The tour had a scheduled stop for passing purposes at Tiverton and it was here that Network Rail dictated the tour went forward to Paignton assisted by 47804.
On the return leg of the trip, 47804 was positioned behind 55022 as insurance against failure. This proved unnecessary in the end with 55022 performing faultlessly for the remainder of the tour.
