50040 Leviathan (later renamed Centurion), worked its last train in August 1989 and was withdrawn in August 1990 due to a worn out power unit, thereby becoming the 19th Class 50 locomotive to be withdrawn after over 21 years of active service. Its engine hours stood at 8,373.
After its withdrawal, 50040 Leviathan was stripped for parts. It had been one of the nine locomotives sent to Booths scrap yard in Rotherham in early 1992, then part of the failed bid by Operation Collingwood and finally was privately owned.
50040 resided at the Coventry Railway Centre for a number of years. Its condition was little more than a rotting shell on scrap bogies with many of its large components removed. During 2008 it was the subject of a final search for remaining spare parts and then sold for scrap.
