From a combined total of eighteen surviving Class 50 locomotives, there are currently three examples that are fitted with the mandatory electronic equipment to allow for their operation on the national mainline.

Historically, some preservation groups have sometimes provided motive power for a variety of trains for use in association with special events. Throughout 2006, in conjunction with Arriva Trains Wales, The Class 50 Alliance Ltd provided locomotives for additional trains in the South Wales area during major events at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff as well as some service trains to Fishguard. After nearly 14 years since their last timetabled use with British Rail, Class 50s returned to work a spell of regular, revenue-earning services on the national mainline.
