Rather surprisingly there remain a small number of heritage locomotives in use on the British national rail network. Some are operated by private or spot-hire rail operators whilst others have been reconditioned for export to Europe.
The Class 57 diesel locomotives were introduced by Brush Traction between 1997-2004. They are rebuilds of former Class 47 locomotives fitted with a refurbished EMD 12-645E3 or EMD 12-645F3B power unit and reconditioned alternator.
The Class 69 diesel locomotives were introduced by Progress Rail from 2020 onwards. They are rebuilds of former Class 56 locomotives fitted with a new EMD 12N-710G3B-T2 power unit as fitted to Class 66 locomotives 66752-66779.
